What do you do with Redstone dust other than compasses and watches?
Also, is Redstone rarer than diamond?

I tried connecting a iron door to a lever with redstone dust, but flipping the switch didn't work. What can it do/not do? Minepedia.net's description was very vague

try checking videos on youtube or google it and look for guides, it is very tricky
oh, this is a nice very basic video :)

you may want to watch it!
there is a second part of that video:

something else cool to make "automatic" doors is placing a pressure plate in front of it, so as u walkt into the door, you press it and the door opens, anyway, i wouldnt use it to open a door from the outside, thought mobs might press it to and open the door, lol

that looks might help me a lot, what does "RS NOR" "RS NAND" "XNOR" "rapid pulser" "memory cell" "5-clock" "XOR" terms mean?

Oh wow...That's really complicated. I'll get it eventually... Right now I've got wooden double doors to open with a switch and the redstone with a method that I got from the video. It's amazing what one can do with it.

Red stone is like circuitry Howl, those terms like XNOR, are the name of the gate logic, they only stand for that configuration. As for rapid pulsar, it's flashes rapidly, great for red alert sirens. The 5-clock, is a 5 phase clock, a 60-clock, would function as a working clock. Memory cells remember what level you pull.

On a regular gate, if you flip a lever the light goes off, if you flip it again, it turns back on.
A memory cell doesn't work this way, you have to flip the other switch to turn the circuit back on or off. It remembers which lever you pulled last. People use these in combination locks I believe

The best way to understand them is make them all, and mess with the levers to see what they do

haha, im pro at messing with stuff xD
I cant believe redstone dust and torches could be so complex, as far as i knew, redstone dust mechanics looked quite simple, i guess they are, but the torches have different programming for different situations maybe, i guess they dont work the same always (just alternating power)
or do they? and those are just effects of manipulating this?

Actually I always thought opposite, because I never understood "how" they worked. Even simple jobs make no sense to me.
I have no idea, all I know is it makes no sense to me lol

hahaha, i already posted this but i dont know if you watched it, it really helps understanding redstone :) very basic, HELPS A LOT, it is a must watch:
    Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_85801&v=rvFauzzA9pY&feature=iv
    Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnyVqS8wD6E

and besides that, you got all your complex redstone mechanics you posted, haha

actually i am going to suggest Robin to publish/feature it in the minecraftnews or youtube channel :p

Edit: the youtube vids, even though they are from someone else, they result very useful

There's not a way to get redstone to go vertically up two blocks, is there?
@Apv yes I think he means the image

You can make them go up howl, you need to make an inverter.

An inverter is often used to extend the power of a redstone line, you really should know that howl =/. I
